Jaffa Quake Spread Review

They’ve done it again!

Grenade changed the game in 2017 with the release of their highly anticipated Carb Killa spread. Following the success of the Carb Killa bars over the past couple of years, Grenade wanted to add a new weapon to their armoury of great tasting products.

The original flavours released were milk chocolate, “hazelnutter” & white chocolate cookie. Although all of these flavours were extremely tasty, in my opinion the Jaffa Quake flavour just beats them!

Texture & Taste

As you can see, the spread is a smooth criminal. You will have no problems if your plan is to spread it on toast, a bagel or any other bakery product. You could also add it to porridge for added flavour!

If like me, you reach straight for the largest spoon you can find and dive in head first, as the heaped serving of goodness enters your mouth, you will instantly recognise the taste. My first thought was Terry’s Chocolate orange (although a melted form). It really is that good!

The only negative I can think of is if you put too much in your mouth at once, it’s very thick and you may struggle to breathe for 15-20 seconds. It’s worth it.

Macro-nutrient Breakdown

Let’s take a look at the numbers:

Macro-nutrient Per 100g

520 calories

Fat 38g
Of which Saturates 9g
Carbohydrate 35g
Of which Sugar 5.6g
Of which Polyols 28.5g
Protein 20g

Overall the Carb Killa spread is a well-rounded option for a snack or to supplement your existing meals. It is low in saturated fats and sugar, and contains 28.5g of polyols per 100g. Polyols, also called sugar alcohols, are a group of versatile, reduced-calorie carbohydrates that provide the taste and texture of sugar with about half the calories.

I wouldn’t really recommend this product as a “high protein” food, as if you follow the recommended serving size (33g) you will have 7g of protein, however at 172 calories it’s a calorie dense option.

Other Talking Points

The Carb Killa spread is Vegetarian Society Approved, Gluten Free and contains 87% less sugar than leading chocolate spread brands.

Overall I would rate this product very highly for taste and quality. It’s something you should definitely (probably) try once, but is it going to change your life and boost your gainz? Most likely not. Does it taste as good as chocolate spreads that are much higher in sugar? I would say yes!

Priced at £5.99 or currently 2 for £10, the price is competitive compared to rival products. The recommended serving size is 33g which would provide you with 11 servings, however it may be quite easy to go through the tub using larger serving sizes, which would reduce the value rating.

I would recommend using this product to hit the “sweet tooth” if you’re on a calorie controlled diet, and the fact it’s 20% protein is an added boost!

Overall I would give this product a 9/10 score!
