Performance Meals Review

What Are the Performance Meals?

Performance meals are one of the latest innovations in the health & fitness market, they focus on providing convenient ready to go food.

We’ve had some of the Performance Meals on Monster for a little while now and they’re doing really well, with the release of their new Lunch Pots we thought it’s about time we did a review to show you what all the fuss is about.

Essentially, they bring together quality ingredients that taste good and provide them in a high quality sealed package that keeps them fresh for a decent amount of time, plus you can take them around with you without carrying around a fridge.

That’s the overview, no let’s get into some specifics.

Monster Thoughts…

One of the main attractions to the Performance Meals is their convenience, they are easy to carry around, they come in a strongly sealed pouch that you can be confident won’t rip/explode in your bag (if you’ve had food spill in your bag know what we’re talking about!) and they can be eaten wherever you are as they are ready to eat.

Ideally they’re best eaten when heated up, but for the warriors out there who need to eat at certain times, having a whole food product that can be eaten anywhere is very handy indeed.

Air and Watertight Packaging

The packaging for the Performance Meals pouches is something that allows the product to be what it is, a long lasting product that seals in the awesome flavours.

This packaging is pretty tough and not only that but it is air & water tight, keeping the ingredients inside locked in – keeping them fresher for longer.

Ingredients & Nutritional Breakdown

As far as convenience food goes, there’s certainly a lot out there. But when you look at the ingredients, they aren’t always “the best” and often taste like that’s the case too.

We’ll let you judge for yourself by including the ingredients on the Thai Style Chicken Breast with Brown Rice.

Cooked Chicken Breast (41%), Reconstituted Coconut Milk Powder (21%)(contains Milk), Red Peppers (13%), Cooked Whole Grain Brown Rice (13%), Water Chestnuts (3%), Cornflour, Green Thai Curry Paste (Green Jalapeno, Lemongrass, Sunflower Oil, Water, Herb, Spices, Red Pepper, Garlic, Salt, Red Chillies, Lime Juice Concentrate), Ginger Puree, Chilli Puree, Garlic Puree, Lemongrass, Coriander, Olive Oil, Lime Leaves, Himalayan Crystal Salt.

Not bad huh?

Then there is the nutritional break down..

Typical Values Per 100g Per Pack g
Energy kj 441 1544
Energy kcal 105 366
Protein 13.7 48.0
Carbohydrate 6.8 23.8
of which sugars 0.7 2.5
Fat 2.5 8.8
of which saturates 1.6 5.6
Fibre 1.4 4.9
Sodium 0.1 0.35
Equivalent as Salt 0.3 1.1

Again, pretty good!

This is ideal for someone who’s after a high protein meal that has some complementary ingredients to make it taste good and well balanced.

£ Price

When we looked at the price per meal compared to making something like this on your own is pretty cost effective to say the least!

When you factor in all of the ingredients, your time (making the meal, putting it in containers & cleaning up) it’s certainly a good option. If you compare it to a take-away meal or sandwich it’s probably 30-50% cheaper (like for like). As let’s be honest, when you buy a sandwich on the high street they are hardly ever high in protein - as that’s the most expensive ingredient and most people aren’t fitness enthusiasts that want that much protein.

What Cooking?

Preparing a decent meal usually takes 10-15 minutes or so, but with these Performance Meals it’s as easy as pressing a few buttons on the microwave, just follow the instructions on the back – it’s simple! (Although as previously stated, they are also ready to eat if you can’t heat them).

It’s all good having decent ingredients but we want taste too, right? If you can have both, then why not!

Well, here we certainly do have both.

As you can see from the ingredients, there’s plenty of tasty stuff added into this Thai Style meal - herbs, chilli, garlic, peppers, spices, salt and a whole lot more which gives the meal flavour and a varied texture too.

In conclusion, we really like the Performance Meals -- they use whole foods, decent ingredients and taste good, especially considering that they’re ready to eat which seems to be down to the packing technology that’s been used.
