What Can Amino Acids Do For You?

As I’m sure you’re aware, there are a plethora of many different supplements all claiming to be the best at promoting either muscle gain, and/or weight loss, but what are they and what do they all mean?!

In this article we are going to delve a little deeper into what Amino Acids are, and how they can help us.

Amino Acids are basically the building blocks of protein chains (polypeptides), there are a total of 22 Amino Acids required by the human body, 10 of which are essential, most Amino Acids can be created in the body, but there are 9 Amino Acids that cannot be synthesised by the body. Amino Acid functions range from supporting metabolism, tissue repair, muscle growth, to stabilising your mood. It is vital to maintain whole body health and prevent illnesses from heart disease, diabetes and hypoglycaemia, depression, a weak immune system, cancer, and more.

We won’t go into detail on every Amino Acid, but we will touch on “Branched Chained Amino Acids”, BCAA’s, more specifically leucine, isoleucine and valine.

BCAA’s can help create an anabolic environment with research having shown that Leucine can help promote protein synthesis and up-regulating enzymes, a study in the journal “Muscle and Nerve” found that leucine reduced the expression of genes that break down muscle tissue during periods of inactivity (catabolism)

BCAA’s have also been found to reduce abdominal fat over a period of time, the “International Journal Of Sports Medicine” found that over the course of 19 days there was a significant amount of abdominal fat lost compared to a person who wasn’t taking BCAA’s.

There is also research to support BCAA’s actually improve your strength, a British study found that in two groups, one group taking Amino Acids and the other not, that in the group taking the amino acids, their strength increased by 41% compared to the 31% of the placebo group, both groups followed the same training programme.

So as you can see, just some of the main benefits we can take from BCAA’s are, increased strength, improved fat loss and greater muscle retention!
