Ketogenic Diets - What is the affect performance?

There is an increasing use of very low carb ketogenic diets (VLCKD) in weight control and in sports requiring minimal body fat percentages. What has to be investigated is, whether the lack of carbs affect a dieter’s strength and performance.

A very recent study, published in July, 2012 aimed to compare the effect of VLCKD (inclusive of green vegetables, olive oil, fish and meat) and normal athlete’s diet on performance aspects like leg raise, push up, parallel bar dips, pull up, squat jump etc.

8 athletes were administered VLCKD for 30 days and a normal athlete’s diet for another 30 days. No significant differences were detected between VLCKD and normal athlete’s diet in all performance tests.

Despite the well known importance of carbohydrates on athletic performance, the study demonstrated VLCKD is an upcoming science to target body fat without affecting an athlete’s strength performance
