So here it is the eagerly anticipated fourth part to the green series!! In part four, I will go over the last of the essential vegetables……. SPINACH!
It was Popeye’s food of choice for a reason! It is a VERY nutrient dense food. It has great amounts of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients (which I have previously mentioned), whilst being relatively low in calories.
It’s easily sourced and quite cheap and you will find it in most grocers and supermarkets. As always fresh is always best, but for those of you who only have a matter of minutes to prepare it can be found in the frozen food section, ready to be microwaved and can be dished up within a matter of minutes.
It is packed with vitamins and is a good source of the following; vitamin K, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B2, vitamin B6 and vitamin E. It also has an abundance of minerals which include folate, magnesium, zinc, phosphorus, selenium, niacin, copper and iron. Each of the mentioned vitamins and minerals have an array of uses within the body and it is essential to get good amounts of these to help maintain a healthy body. Benefits include; cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal health, anti-inflammatory properties, brain function and eye health (as spinach is loaded with the carotenoid lutein, proven to protect against eye diseases).
As well as the anti-oxidant effects of the vitamin A and C, spinach also has flavonoids, which also act as anti-oxidants. Protecting the body from free radicals, research has shown that these flavonoids have anti-cancer properties and provide disease protection.
If you’re not already on your way to the supermarket, I suggest you go now and fill your kitchen with SPINACH!
As always, I like to share with you a little recipe for each of the foods I talk about. And today, I’m going to share with you one of my different recipes! As some of us are always on the move with only a matter of minutes to spare to prepare your next meal, here’s a quick, very easy and TASTY way to enjoy spinach.
2 Scoops Whey
Desired amount of frozen spinach (4-6 cubes)
Blended all together, into the most nutrient dense shake you’re probably ever likely to have! And it’s as simple as that. The ingredient list can be chopped and changed to suit, with the addition of other things like chopped nuts or seeds etc… But that’s the simplified version, whey, spinach and water! Give it a go, you will be pleasantly surprised!
