Sometimes it can be very easy to get lost in all the ‘rif raf’ on a website, when all you want are the ‘nuts and bolts’ of a specific topic! In this case, it would be a simple to follow ‘how’ guide to build an athletic and functional physique! I myself get very frustrated when I search a website I don’t get the answer I want, so here I hope to give you a ‘1 stop’ article where you can get all the answers you want on how to get started!
Please forgive me if I cover things which you may find obvious or tedious, the fact is a lot of people don’t necessarily understand the basics so it is important we do that first!
Before you start, you must identify your overall goal and make it in relation to your current situation. After you decide exactly what it is you want to achieve, this gives you a very clear insight as to what you need to eat, which supplements you need and what style of training you need to adopt. Then, you can set smaller goals along the way to make your journey more rewarding and more progressive! For example, if you want to build a beach body and you are very skinny, aim to add 2 ½ stone of muscle on in the next 3 years, but break this up into smaller fragments. By Christmas aim to be 8lbs bigger in muscle and so on! Looking back, and seeing where I am today I cannot emphasise enough the importance of goal setting. Personally I lost view of my goals and just chased size and strength, now I am working towards exactly what I set out to do initially! If you can do this from day one, you will save a lot of energy and time and you will find it all the more enjoyable!
Get a diet!
OK, let me say this in the most simple, English way I possibly can (which is harder than it sounds because I am Welsh!) – ‘’DIET IS EVERYTHING!’’ Again, I will say ‘’DIET IS EVERYTHING’’!!! If you think that diet is just part of getting into shape then you need to really think again, without a diet you are nobody in the game of ‘getting into shape’! If you want to pack on some lean muscle then here my a general set of rules –
1-1.5g of protein per pound of body weight
1-1.5g of carbohydrates per pound of body weight
0.75g of fats per pound of body weight
Drink at least 4 litres of clear water a day
Sleep at least 8 solid hours per day (try and sleep same hours and keep the routine)
If you want a specific outline diet, follow the link below and you should be able to pick up some ideas from here!
Getting a structured training plan is so important otherwise you will end up over training, missing fundamental exercises, making common mistakes and this will get you no where fast. If you are failing to see a return on your investment in energy and time, you will soon get fed up! Again, to get you on track follow the below link to get some more detailed tips on structuring a training programme suited to lean muscle mass and fat loss!

Admittedly this may not be the most ‘rip roaring read’ you will ever set your eyes on, but I felt this was needed. People will ask endlessly what to do here or there, and now I hope this has provided a solid basic foundation to build from. Now you should have an idea of what nutrition you need to follow, what kind of training plan you need to adopt and what supplements you should be focussing on! In fact, I would love to hear about your guys progress too, so hit me up at email@example.com!
