As you know by now, I am a huge advocator of overall health, I am not in this game to ‘get as huge as possible’ or as ‘strong as I can be’ at all costs. For me, you have to think long term with your health and you need to be healthy as you can be every step of the way! If you are healthy, you are happy, and I think with your health anything is possible. Potentially, ‘Health’ is my favourite word!!!! What I wanted to touch on today was immune function, and why I believe it to be vital, and to try and help you learn from mistakes I made as a beginner!
When I started I couldn’t care less about ‘inferior’ and ‘pointless’ supplements like multi-vitamins, I just didn’t see the big deal. Been 18, you are invincible, but I guess it was no coincidence that I always had colds and always felt lethargic. Looking back, I think why oh why didn’t I listen, but hey, that’s life and that’s how you learn. What I don’t want you to do is go through that same process, take it from me, supporting your immune system is of UTMOST importance if you are at all serious about your gains as an athlete.
When we exercise our bodies are exposed to extreme levels of stress, whether it is a 5 mile jog on the roads or a Y3T leg workout. As a result, our immune systems take a battering and it is unavoidable, if you are a hard training athlete. So you have two options; stop training OR take the correct steps to enhance your immune function. Hopefully, you chose the latter, in which case makes the next bit relevant to you!
Most athletes will find that too much fruit can be detrimental to their performance, because of its sugar content. Not only can it stimulate fat gains, it can also reduce your energy levels by causing a fluctuation in your blood sugar levels. Therefore, with limited fruit intake to perhaps once a day, maybe twice, it is likely your vitamin levels are going to fall below par. Remember, you cannot compare your nutritional needs to that of ‘regular Joe’ because you are an athlete, your body is a ‘fine tuned’ training machine. Therefore you need more of everything!
This is precisely why I am a huge advocator of market leading multi vitamins such as USN MultiPlex Sport, Gaspari Anavite as well other leading brands. By ensuring your body has adequate levels of vital vitamins available, your immune system shouldn’t suffer. Therefore you are able to continue training hard, you wont begin to feel run down or constantly ‘tired,’ prompting you take too much time off training. More than that, I believe if you are healthy, you are in the best possible shape to progress, whatever your sport or hobby! I genuinely believe I feel a huge difference in my overall health when I use a good multi vitamin. My skin becomes clearer, I have more colour in my face, my energy levels are enhanced, I feel fitter and just generally full of vitality! Did you know a good multi vitamin can also support fat loss? If you didn’t, you do now, so there are plenty of reasons to add this supplement to your plan. In fact, a multi vitamin is in my ‘Top 3’ supplements to take for EVERY athlete. In fact, in an ideal world, I believe everyone should take multi vitamins!
