Protein powder is a great way to incorporate more protein into your diet. With so many brands and flavours available, the choice of protein shakes is endless. So much so, you might find yourself getting bored of your everyday protein drink.

In this article, we will explain the perfect protein powder recipes to shake up your routine. We’ll show you how to use protein powder in recipes you wouldn’t usually think of, giving you more tasty options for keeping on top of your protein intake.

Protein pancakes recipe

Pancakes are a breakfast staple, bringing a sweet highlight to your morning. By creating your own protein pancake mix, you can inject a much-needed protein boost into your diet with minimal effort.

To make our favourite protein pancakes, you only need 5 simple ingredients. Alongside protein powder, this recipe incorporates oats as they have several health benefits that can help you start your day right.

For this protein pancake mix, you will need:

  •       1 scoop (25-30g) whey protein powder
  •       50g porridge oats
  •       1 large egg
  •       100ml milk
  •       ¼ tsp baking powder
  •       ¼ tsp salt
  •       1 tsp vanilla extract

Method:

  1.       Grind or blitz your oats in a blender until they look like fine flour. Combine with the other dry ingredients: protein powder and baking powder.
  2.       Mix in the eggs and milk and whisk until you have a smooth texture.
  3.       Place the batter in the fridge whilst you heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium-high heat.
  4.       When the pan is warm enough, pour ¼ of the batter into the pan. Tilt the pan in a circular motion to evenly coat the surface of the pan.
  5.       Wait for approximately 50 seconds or until bubbles form on the pancake before flipping. Cook the other side until the pancake is a light brown colour.

To add exciting flavours to your pancakes, add your favourite fillings and toppings. Adding mashed banana to the mixture allows you to incorporate both natural protein and sweetness into the batter. For chocolate lovers, crumble a chocolate protein bar over the pancakes and allow it to melt for the ultimate indulgence!

Protein mug cake recipe

Want a warm, ooey-gooey treat in under a minute? A protein mug cake is the perfect sweet snack packed with protein. This simple protein powder mug cake is perfect for those on a low-carb diet such as the Atkins diet, as it curbs sweet cravings without going overboard.

Make sure you have a large mug to make the cake in. The sides of the mug need to be tall enough to allow the cake mixture to expand as it bakes in the microwave. You also need to ensure that your casein powder has a flavour to it, such as vanilla or chocolate.

For this recipe, you will need:

  •       1 scoop flavoured casein or milk protein powder
  •       1 tbsp flour
  •       1 tbsp granulated sugar or sweetener
  •       1 tsp vanilla extract
  •       ¼ tsp salt
  •       ¼ tsp baking powder
  •       1 egg
  •       2 tbsp milk

Method:

  1.       Grease a large, microwave-safe mug.
  2.       In the mug, combine your dry ingredients and mix thoroughly
  3.       Add in your wet ingredients, using a fork or whisk to ensure a smooth consistency.
  4.       Microwave the mug protein cake for 60 seconds. If the cake is not ready, heat at 15 seconds intervals until baked.

You can improve the flavour by adding a small amount of cocoa powder, cinnamon, or vanilla extract. To make this cake even more exciting, add a scoop of nut butter to the centre of the mix before putting it in the microwave. This will melt the nut butter and create a lava cake effect, adding more scrumptious flavours and textures to your desert.

Protein cookie recipe

Everybody loves a good old fashioned cookie! Batch baking protein powder cookies allow you to have a sweet treat to hand, with the added benefits of high protein. Better yet, you can’t have a cookie without milk, meaning you can double your protein intake in one delicious snack.

To make 12 protein cookies, you will need:

  •       ½ cup vanilla protein powder
  •       2tbsp coconut flour
  •       ½ cup almond butter or cashew butter
  •       ¼ tsp salt
  •       1 large egg
  •       ¼ tsp baking soda
  •       A finely chopped protein chocolate bar (we recommend Mars Hi-Protein Bars!)

Method:

  1.       Preheat your oven to around 118 °C.
  2.       In a large mixing bowl, beat your nut butter of choice until it is fluffy.
  3.       Add in the remaining ingredients and beat until smooth. The dough should be sticky but not mushy. For a firmer do, add in more protein powder. For a looser dough, use a splash of milk.
  4.       Fold in the chocolate chips or chocolate protein bar of your choice.
  5.       Shape into balls and place on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven for 5-6 minutes until golden brown. Allow the cookies to cool before eating!

With just a few tweaks, you can also use this recipe to make a delicious protein cookie dough. Simply remove the baking soda, substitute your egg for 2tbsp of milk, and make sure you toast your flour before adding it to the mixture.
