Creatine Shown to Have Potential in Preventing Osteoporosis

July 27th, 2012 No comments

What is it?

First identified 180 years ago, and named after the Greek word for meat, creatine is a nitrogenous organic acid which occurs naturally in humans and boosts energy to all the body’s cells, particularly muscle, as it increases the formation of something called adenosine triphosphate.

How do athletes use it?

For some 20 years now, bodybuilders, athletes and other sports players who want to develop their muscle mass have used creatine, generally at least doubling the quantity they could get even from a very high-protein diet.

It’s possible to take these supplements in powder, capsule or as tablets.

Is it safe?

Extended research over the past 10 years has found that oral supplementation of up to 20 daily grams is extremely safe, with very few side-effects. The body’s response to resistance training is boosted, enhancing muscle production in men and women.

The only times when users need to exercise caution is if they have an underlying liver disease, and during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Latest news on creatine supplements

Studies have already revealed that bone cells use creatine for energy and bone formation. Now a study shows the substance could have potential for preventing the bone condition osteoporosis, something which the UK is likely to see more of in the future as more people live longer.

A study in Canada held over 10-12 weeks and involving men aged older than 60 put those taking part in a weight training programme, with half on creatine supplements and the remainder on a placebo. Urine samples from the research suggested that those taking creatine experienced less bone deterioration.

Now the study has been extended to research both men and women aged over 50. The same format – weight training and half taking the supplement, the other 50% a placebo – will this time be expanded to cover a full year.

The team will set out to show that the non-placebo group will experience an extra advantage in terms of greater bone density, and that supplementing can be an extra weapon in the ongoing battle against osteoporosis.

Making the Most of Creatine Supplements

February 14th, 2012 No comments

You can take creatine supplements before or after exercise, but if you take them about an hour before working out, you will have more energy, and be able to complete a more intense session.

Supplements come as creatine tablets or powder. Most products recommend around five grams of creatine per serving. You can also mix creatine with a protein shake.

With what is known as “creatine loading”, you take four or five servings of creatine supplements for the first five days. But it’s actually better to stay at the recommended dosage – you will still feel the benefit of your creatine tablets or powder.

While it is not an exact science, you could try taking creatine for a month or two, then having a week or two off. It’s up to you whether you only take it only on the days you hit the gym. Some people take it every day, others only on workout days.

Creatine helps with muscle building and maintenance, which could assist with fat loss. After all, the more muscle you have, the lower your levels of fat will be.

So no wonder so many top bodybuilders, amateur and professional, are convinced that creatine is one of the best bodybuilding supplements.

At Monster Supplements, we have a wide range of creatine supplements in various forms. Have your creatine powder or other order delivered direct to your door and shop at a time and in a place to suit you. We also offer free UK-wide delivery – learn more online.

Creating Extra Energy with Creatine

November 14th, 2011 No comments

creatineSome cheap protein supplements contain products which will help you gain weight but in an unhealthy way. This is not the case when it comes to our products, which are from some of the leading manufacturers in the business. You can benefit from reductions of up to 63% off the retail price as well as free UK delivery too.

As a bodybuilder or weightlifter, one thing you certainly need a lot of is energy. Creatine is a product which occurs naturally in the body’s muscle cells and helps give it energy, particularly muscle energy. It is also found as a natural nutrient in high-protein foods such as meat. It does this by increasing the amount of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is produced and helps to improve performance for short, intense activities in particular. For this reason, creatine supplements are a popular choice for athletes, bodybuilders and wrestlers, because they provide up to three times the amount that could be produced through an extremely high-protein diet. Another benefit of creatine is that it reduces the amount of lactic acid produced by the body, and therefore the amount of muscle fatigue you suffer. The best form of creatine is monohydrate powders such as those by Maximuscle, PhD and Optimum.

This is also a great product for endurance athletes as well as bodybuilders, because it helps with both stamina and endurance. If you are an endurance athlete, you should also think about supplements which can help with your recovery following a period of exercise.
